Headmap Install Guide: Brave, Chrome, Edge, Firefox

Headmap is a small browser extension that shows a page's title, meta description, canonical URL and H1–H6 outline at a glance. It is not in the Chrome Web Store yet, so on Brave, Chrome and Edge we load it from source: download the files, point the browser at the folder, and you are done in about five minutes. On Firefox it is a single signed file.
What you need
- Brave, Chrome or Edge; all three use the same extension system. Or Firefox 140 or newer, which has its own steps below.
- A browser or
gitto download the repository.
Steps 1 to 5 are for Brave, Chrome and Edge. On Firefox, skip to Firefox.
1. Download the repository
There are two ways. If you use Git, clone it:
git clone https://github.com/YakupEmreYerli/headmap.git
If you don't, download it as a ZIP and unpack it into a folder:
https://github.com/YakupEmreYerli/headmap/archive/refs/heads/main.zip
Keep the folder somewhere permanent. The browser reads the extension from it every time it starts; delete the folder and the extension stops working.
2. Open the extensions page
Type the one for your browser into the address bar:
chrome://extensions
In Brave it is brave://extensions, in Edge edge://extensions.
3. Turn on Developer mode
Switch on Developer mode in the corner of the page. Loading an extension from outside the store needs it.
4. Load the folder
Click Load unpacked and pick the folder from step one. Make sure it is the folder that contains manifest.json; from the ZIP this is usually headmap-main.
5. Pin it and try it
Pin Headmap from the extensions menu in the toolbar, then click its icon on any page: the title, meta description, canonical URL and heading outline show up in the popup. The count turns red when the title passes 60 characters or the description passes 160.
Headmap does not run on the browser's own pages (chrome://, brave://) or in extension stores; by browser rule, no extension can read those.
Firefox
Firefox does not need the repository: Headmap has a build signed by Mozilla. Download it from the latest release:
https://github.com/YakupEmreYerli/headmap/releases/latest/download/headmap.xpi
Drag headmap.xpi into a Firefox window and click Add. Headmap appears in the extensions menu (the puzzle icon) in the toolbar; pin it from there and click it on any page. It stays installed after a restart.
Headmap does not run on Firefox's own about: pages or on Firefox Add-ons.
Updating
If you installed with Git, pull the latest version in the folder, then press the reload button on the Headmap card on the extensions page:
cd headmap
git pull
If you used the ZIP, unpack the new ZIP over the same folder and press reload. On Firefox, install the headmap.xpi of the new release the same way.
Permissions and privacy
Headmap asks for two permissions, activeTab and scripting. It reads the current tab only when you open the popup, keeps nothing and sends nothing: there is no background script, no storage and no network request.
